Mobile Software Companies and Their Online Marketing Strategies

For many years I have developed and managed marketing campaigns for mobile software companies. I ran seminars, Pay Per Click campaigns, white paper distributions, email blasts, webinars, Web 2.0 strategies etc. As a result, I am very interested in seeing which mobile software companies advertise online. It costs money to place an ad on websites, blogs and on search pages. Many companies simply don't have the money to advertise these days.

Barcode Scans and Prices on Mobile Handheld Computers and Smart Phones

Last week I wrote an article pondering the benefits of using my iPhone to capture the bar code on grocery store products, using the integrated digital camera, and then have my iPhone use its GPS coordinates to look at the prices of this product in other grocery store locations that are close to mine.

Want to Succeed In Social Media?

Recently, I've seen a lot of studies about the lack of success of small businesses in social media. In one eMarketer article alone they reference not one but two of them: Small businesses are not hitting it off with social media, according to an August 2009 study from Citibank. More than three-quarters of US small-business executives surveyed did not find social networks helpful for generating leads or expanding their business.

Christophe Bisciglia Will Discuss Technical and Business Issues of Hadoop at Cloud Computing Expo

Many in the industry have heard of Hadoop, and in his session at Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, Christophe Bisciglia, Co-Founder of Cloudera, gets a little deeper. Hadoop is based on the same methods Google uses to store and process petabytes of data, but thanks to contributions from many in the open source community you can leverage these same methods to make sense of every increasing volumes of enterprise data. Bisciglia will highlight the technical and business issues that make Hadoop so powerful for large scale data processing.

Jill Tummler Singer of CIA to Present at Cloud Computing Expo on November 2

As the pressure mounts to meet more stringent budgets, CIOs need to find the proper balance between transforming IT and reducing costs. IT operational costs continue to increase as a percentage of overall IT dollars. At the same time, IT is being pressured to provide an innovative, competitive advantage for the business. Will the Enterprise Cloud support both? Can the Enterprise Cloud make infrastructure operations faster, easier, cheaper, and safer while also unleashing the transformative creativity of the workforce? Will the Cloud be both a strong efficiency play as well as the Infrastructure’s Ultimate Revenge by positioning IT to be the accelerator of corporate strategy instead of its bottleneck? All these questions, plus many more will be answered for you by Jill Tummler Singer during her session.

Introducing Posh-FourSquare

<img style="border-right-width: 0px; width="240" height="97" />Those who know me, can attest that I'm a early adopter when it comes to social networking systems. The latest one I've been getting into lately is FourSquare.com.

FourSquare.com describes itself as 50% friend finder, 30% social city guide, and 20% nightlife game. They include ways to keep up with what your friends are doing as well as offering up some fun challenges to have you explore cities in different ways.

Once I've played around with a social networking site for a bit, my next step is to see what kind of API's they have exposed and see if I can build my own app to integrate with the site. It turns out that the FourSquare.com has exposed a public API in their FourSquare-API Google Group.

So, as I did with my Posh-Tweet, Posh-Bing, Posh-TwitPic, and Posh-Delicious libraries, I went ahead and wrote a PowerShell library of functions to access the FourSquare APIs.

The API is broken down into these categories:

Credentials

Get-FourSquare.Credentials - Get the credentials for your FourSquare.com account.

Set-FourSquare.Credentials - Set the credentials for your FourSquare.com account.

GEO Methods

Get-FourSquare.Citites - Returns a list of currently active cities.

Check-FourSquare.City - When given a lat/long, returns the closest foursquare city.

Switch-FourSquare.City - When given a valid foursquare cityid, changes the user's default city.

Get-FourSquare.Checkins - Returns a list of recent checkins from friends.

New-FourSquare.Checkin - Allows you to check-in to a place.

Get-FourSquare.History - Returns a history of checkins for the authenticated user (across all cities).

User Methods

Get-FourSquare.User - Returns profile information (badges, etc) for a given user.

Get-FourSquare.Friends - Returns a list of the authenticated user's friends.

Get-FourSquare.Venues - Returns a list of venues near the area specified or that match the search term.

Get-FourSquare.Venue - Returns venue data, including mayorship, tips/to-dos and tags

Add-FourSquare.Venue - Allows you to add a new venue.

Tip Methods

Get-FourSquare.Tips - Returns a list of tips near the area specified.

Add-FourSquare.Tip - Allows you to add a new tip or to-do at a venue.

Other Methods

Get-FourSquare.Status - Returns the string "ok".

Usage:

To use the API's you must first register on FourSquare.com. The username and password you use to create the account will be used in this API with the Set-FourSquare.Credentials method. After setting your credentials, you can call any of the other methods and start updating your status from the comfort of your PowerShell prompt. The following example will register the functions in the current runspace, set the credentials, query the available citites, and then checkin at the Cafe next door for lunch.

Cloud Computing in Context

My presentation from Friday’s Future of Technology in Education (FOTE) conference in London is now on Slideshare, and reproduced here. Cutting through the Hype: Clouds in Context set out to question some of the preconceptions that many people seem to hold about Cloud Computing, and I suggest that the majority are less black and white than they initially seem.

WILS: The Concise Guide to *-Load Balancing

Understanding the various types of load balancing

When someone says “load balancing” the immediate reaction is usually to think of pools of servers and applications being load balanced to provide high-availability for massive sites like Amazon or Google or Facebook. But there’s a couple of other types of load balancing that deserve to be recognized because although they sit in the shadow of “load balancing” they are often invaluable assets to network and application architects attempting to ensure availability and adherence to service level agreements.

Link Load Balancing
Link load balancing is the act of distributing network traffic over at least two network (ISP) links. Link load balancing is used to provide availability through failover in the event one network link becomes unavailable or to optimize delivery of data by intelligently choosing the ISP link with the best performance characteristics (latency, congestion, etc…) for the application in question. Link Load Balancing generally operates at Layer 2 through Layer 3.

Global Load Balancing

Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) is used to distribute application requests across multiple data centers (cloud or traditional) to assure availability and meet performance requirements. Disaster Recovery (DR) scenarios often include the use of GSLB to redirect users to a secondary (or tertiary) data center in the event of a disaster, but GSLB is also increasingly used to manage performance through the use of GeoLocation technologies and more advanced evaluation of business information involving power consumption and costs and other business-related metrics. GSLB can operate at Layer 4 through Layer 7.

Local Load Balancing

Local Server Load Balancing – often referred to as simply Server Load Balancing (SLB) despite its increasing inaccuracy in the case of cloud computing and virtualized architectures – is used in a local environment to direct application requests to the appropriate application instance based on configured performance and availability metrics, among other variables. The most sophisticated of the load balancing types, local load balancing offers the most flexibility in configuration options and in the variables that can be used to determine where to direct requests. SLB solutions can operate at Layer 4 through Layer 7.

Firewall Load Balancing

Firewall load balancing is a specific implementation of local load balancing used to load balancing multiple firewalls to provide scale, resiliency, and performance. Firewall load balancing has unique requirements that are not always met by SLB even though the core functionality for this type of load balancing is almost always provided by an SLB device. Firewall load balancing solutions require extremely high performance even under massive load, and generally operate at layer 4 (TCP) or below, though some provide options at higher layers of the stack as well.

45,000 Slightly Different Ways to Optimize Mobile Websites

5,000 to 6,000 unique mobile devices having 750 to 800 differentiating characteristics = 45,000 slightly different ways to optimize a mobile website. In regards to standards, it certainly looks as if we have some way to go. Handset manufacturer and service provider alliances and business strategies often conflict with one another, particularly under the existing economic conditions. Consumer market factors will contribute to the standardization problems with varying consumer budgets influencing the types of bundled technologies, thus the devices overall capabilities. Local and regional factors in law, language and culture will also add another dimension to the issue.

Microsoft & Nokia Aim to Go Stomp Blackberries

Microsoft and its new best friend, erstwhile rival Nokia, still the world’s biggest smartphone maker despite Apple and RIM though maybe not as chi-chi, have cut a grand long-term global alliance that will see Microsoft support a mobile OS other than Windows Mobile for the very first time. The move suggests that Microsoft units are starting to adopt more of an “it’s every man for himself, boys” approach to the market.

Reputation Support Will Help Job Security

There are lots of people right now who are in the middle of their career who believe there is no job security. These are surely challenging times. But I believe you can improve your job security in a world that needs authentic value.

The key is to be known for providing value and finding ways to broadcast that fact. Just like a company that is trying to foster a stellar reputation for success, an individual needs to do the same. I think the biggest mistake many of us have made in our career is not keeping a living journal of our successes. By the time someone gets in contact with us on an opportunity, our journal should read like a scorecard that is on fire.

Mobile Comms Can Save 43bn Euro in Energy Bills per Year

A new report released by Vodafone and Accenture says that the use of mobile communications can reduce the annual energy bill for Europe by a €43 billion, equivalent to an annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by at least 113 Mt CO2e (metric ton carbon dioxide equivalents) by 2020.

The figure equals about 2.4% of the CO2 emissions for the whole of the EU, or eliminating close to one-fifth of the UK's emissions. Obviously, there's a catch. Vodafone says that the only way to achieve those goals is for the industry and governments to collaborate.

New BlackBerry Bold Will Generate Record Revenues for the Company - AT&T Mobile CEO

AT&T Mobile CEO Ralph De La Vega announced on Monday morning in an exclusive CNBC interview that the much-delayed and long-awaited BlackBerry Bold will be available starting on Tuesday, November 4. De La Vega said AT&T is projecting record service revenues from the new BlackBerry around the world. He said the device is already generating record revenues in Japan and in other countries where it was introduced. He continued, "BlackBerry Bold is so powerful and fast, we are expecting it to replace PC use in many cases, and data revenues will far exceed the AT&T's subsidy cost of marketing the device."

Do Not Buy Your BlackBerry From AT&T

I am one of the very first BlackBerry users - I've been one since 1997 when it was first introduced at the annual JavaOne Conference in San Francisco. Since then I went through more BlackBerries probably than even JetBlue founder David Neeleman. With all the love and around-the-clock use, comes basic maintenance as well, I guess. Recently, the trackball in my Pearl jammed. We called AT&T support, they rushed me a replacement unit, overnight. (After all my monthly BlackBerry charges as a world traveler/CEO run to around $1,500 each and every month.)

Google Chrome Comes Out of a Comic Book

Philipp Lenssen at the “Google Blogoscoped” blog broke the story on September 1, 2008 that Google is launching an open source browser called Google Chrome. Lennsen writes: “Today there was a comic book in my mail, sent by Google and drawn by no less than Scott McCloud, creator of the classic Understanding Comics. Within the 38 pages, which I’ve scanned and put up, in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome. The book points to www.google.com/chrome, but I can’t see anything live there yet.”

Funambol's BlackBerry software consists of two components. The push email component enables BlackBerries to work with consumer email services such as Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, Hotmail and Gmail, as well as any POP or IMAP server.
